This is the letter I received demanding I change the title of one of my videos

Even if they don’t have a legal case, they can take me to court and exhaust all my financial resources and waste my time.

2015-07-14 Letter to Alan Seid – PILLLC.537TIS

Here is the video in question.

Notice the changed title.

Here is the response I sent:

Dear Ms. Reed:

In response to your letter I have changed the title of my video.

I share the value of protecting the rights of intellectual property creators. It seems not only reasonable but a good business practice that Partners in Leadership would want to safeguard their substantial investment of time, money, and other resources by protecting their intellectual property.

I disagree, however, with the premise that we must threaten someone to have them do as we would like. In this case, I did change the title as you wanted, but I wonder if you and your client realize the missed opportunities inherent in this approach.

It’s hard for me to believe that Partners in Leadership (an organization devoted to “culture change”) could find no more constructive means of engaging with me than a threatening letter through their lawyer: change the title of your video or else!

I feel deep disappointment as I write this. Rather than approach me and engage in the interest of a mutually agreeable outcome — a win-win result — you approach me with language asking me to “comply” and if I do I will “not be required” to change my other content.

Instead of a simple, low-cost, relationship-building approach, my first contact EVER with Partners in Leadership, or with your firm, is a legal threat, thereby limiting the potential of a mutually-beneficial relationship in the future.

I say this to my children, when they use threats to get what they want: why would you try to get something out of force when you could get it out of love?

Sincerely,

~Alan Seid
